The Korean War 1950 to 1953...
Following the Sino Japanese war and the Russo Japanese war. Korea was formally annexed to the Japanese Empire in 1910. Japan continued to occupy Korea through the end of WWII.
Just prior to the surrender of Japan on august 1945 which ended WWII, the WWII allies agreed that in order to facilitate the surrender of Japanese forces on the Korean peninsula, Korea would be divided at the 38th parallel with Russia occupying the northern sector and the United States the south with the advent of the cold war, this division became more pronounced. In 1948, separate governments were established in North and South Korea. By mid 1949, all Russian and American troops were withdrawn from Korea.
Relations between North and South Korea deteriorated, and on june 25, 1950, 89.000 North Korea communist forces crossed the 38th parallel and invaded South Korea. In the first weeks of the war, the South Korean army and a few American troops that had arrived in Korea were pushed to the Pusan area at the southeastern tip of Korea. The United States and 15 other nations sent combat forces. Five other nations sent medical units.
On September 15, 1950, American forces landed at Inchon on the west coast and North Korean forces retreated deep into North Korea, in some places as far as the Yalu River, wich separated North Korea and China. In October and November 1950, 200.000 chinese communist forces crossed the Yalu River and with the North Korean army pushed American troops and other United Nations tropps south to below Seoul. The battle lines moved north and south and finally stabilized in the area of the 38th parallel. However, heavy fighting continued in the hill areas until the end of the war. On july 27, 1953, an armistice was signed establishing a military demarcation line along the then existing battle front line in the vicinity of the 38th parallel. Communist aggression had been repelled at the cost of 33.742 Americans killed in action, 103.284 wounded in the action and 7.245 taken as prisoners of war.
God bless America, I come back in France... Miss u United States...
